Abstract This paper selected "common substances" theme of junior high school science new courses both in China and Japan, compared contents of "properties of substances", "properties and preparation of gases", "solution""state change" and "acid, alkali, salt". This study found the similarities and differences between the two countries in these aspects, and gained enlightenment from it.
