Abstract In the teaching of general chemistry, the authors used balancing chemical equations of combustion of hydrocarbons as the theme, demonstrated the application of mathematical methods in balancing chemical equations, and adopted interdisciplinary approach to enable students from different backgrounds to think and learn from various perspectives to master the nature and application of mathematical methods in chemistry.
