Abstract This article applied project research mode to guide students to complete projects in which students learned to think independently, analyze and solve problems, and developed their innovative ability finally. The main steps of the mode included selection of a project, selection of students, investigation, experiment, conclusion, etc. Project types were experiment, engineering (design) and business. Specific requirements and implementing methods of each step were analyzed in detail and characteristics and effects of the mode were also discussed with examples. The results showed that the mode was feasible and effective for training students' innovative ability but need to be further improved.
