Abstract This paper carefully analyzed the effects of key preparation parameters such as molar ratio of CuSO4 to Na2CO3, temperature, controlled pH, drop order and speed of the reaction materials on the formation of basic copper carbonate (Cu2(OH)2CO3) by IR, XRD, SEM and photographic technology taking copper(Ⅱ) sulphate (CuSO4) and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) as raw materials. The results indicated that light green Cu2(OH)2CO3 with better crystallisation degree could be obtained when the molar ratio of CuSO4 to Na2CO3 was 1.2~1.4 by dropping CuSO4 solution into Na2CO3 solution (positive drop, drop speed=2.0 mL/min) at 328~353 K. The final pH of the reaction suspension was 8.90~9.15. The controlled pH, the drop order and speed of the reaction materials also influenced the final product species. Cu2(OH)2CO3 could be obtained as pH was 7, whereas, Cu2(OH)2CO3 could not be obtained at pH 8~9. In addition, Cu2(OH)2CO3 was not obtained by dropping Na2CO3 solution into CuSO4 solution as the drop speed was 2.0 mL/min, whereas, when the dropping speed of Na2CO3 solution was 0.5 mL/min Cu2(OH)2CO3 could be obtained.
