Abstract The teaching situation of oilfield chemistry course for petroleum engineering major has been analyzed, chemical basis and study initiatives of students, teaching methods and the evaluation mode were considered as the main factors for cultivating students' abilities. So we reformed teaching methods of fundamental theory, focused on capacity training in the whole teaching procedure, and incorporated the scores of class discussions and analysis abilities of students into the total score of the examination. Investigation results showed that the reform could promote the initiative and analysis capacity of students and evaluate leaning achievements of students accurately. System planning of the course and strengthening the combination of theory and experiment teaching are required to enhance the learning achievements of students.
