Abstract The traditional theory-oriented teaching method emphasizing on book-knowledge and ingoring practical abilities can not meet the needs of modern teaching. A preliminary research on the teaching reform of sanitary chemistry course in medical colleges and universities was established in the view of constructivism. Constructivism theory proposes that context, collaboration, negotiation and meaning construction are the four major elements in a learning environment and students are the centre of the class. Teaching process and methods were reformed by scaffolding instruction, anchored instruction and the creation of a supportive and diverse learning atmosphere. Meanwhile, a new comprehensive evaluation system was established accordingly. In this way, the traditional theory-oriented classroom will be successfully transformed into a practice-oriented one, and the quality-oriented teaching objective will be achieved finally.
