Abstract The new curriculum emphasizes students' independent learning, to guide students to preview properly is an important way to stimulate students' active learning and cultivate the students' ability of thinking and self-study. This paper conducted a questionnaire survey on 254 students of Beijing's two demonstration senior high school, and the results showed that most of the students thought it was necessary to prepare lessons before class, but few had the habit of preview. In terms of elements and compounds, most of the students' preparation was mainly limited to record the difficulty, and was not able to use the chemistry thinking of "category-common properties-characteristics". In terms of concepts and principles, about half of the students used the conventional way of thinking to prepare, but few independently thought in the process of preparation. In terms of experiments, most of the students focused on the conventional questions involved in the experiment, but lacked design consciousness. Based on the results, this study put forward the corresponding teaching suggestions.
