Abstract This paper confirmed that magnesium oxide could promote hydrolysis of Fe3+ to form ferric hydroxide colloid from the perspective of theory and experiment. The improved experiment could be carried out at room temperature without heating, had high success rate and obvious phenomena. It was very suitable for classroom demonstration experiment and students' independent experiment.
