Abstract This paper selected oxidation reduction reaction as the research content, and used flow chart method to probe the cognitive structure of 30 senior high school students. Quantitative analysis of visual graphics and cognitive structure variables showed that: there was a large difference in the individual students' cognitive structures on oxidation reduction reaction; students' academic achievement, cognitive structure variables and information processing strategies were correlated each other, students with good grades scored higher on cognitive structure and tended to adopt a high level of information processing model in the process of knowledge construction and organization. This paper also found that most high school students had well established the concepts of gain or loss of electrons, ascending or descending of valence and so on in the learning of oxidation reduction reaction, but the understanding of the specific oxidation-reduction reactions was low respectively.
