Abstract Chemical symbols representation ability directly determined whether students could scientifically think or solve chemistry questions, reflected their chemistry learning levels. This paper developed levels of chemical symbols representation ability, and analyzed the chemical symbols representation ability of senior high school students using optimized measurement tool, the measurement tool had good validity and reliability. The results showed the differences of chemical symbols representation ability of students of different genders, grades and schools.
