Abstract A BODIPY based fluorescent probe 1 for anions containing OH group as recognition sites has been developed. The binding and sensing abilities of probe 1 toward various anions have been studied by absorption, emission and 1H NMR titrations spectroscopy. Probe 1 showed selective response toward fluoride anions through hydrogen bonding interaction. Interestingly, 1-F- ensemble showed OFF-ON fluorescence response toward hydrogen sulfate anions through reversible hydrogen bonding interaction, and thus made 1-F- ensemble a novel probe for the sensing of hydrogen sulfate anions. Moreover, the probe could function as an efficient fluorescent switch modulated by fluoride and hydrogen sulfate anions. This experiment can enable students to further understand the knowledge of fluorescent molecular switch and cultivate interests in scientific research.
