Abstract Arthur Amos Noyes (1866-1936) was a USA physical chemist and educator. He founded the Research Laboratory of Physical Chemistry at MIT, and directed it for 17 years. This laboratory became the cradle of American physical chemists, and he also became the most significant historical figure in the development of chemistry in the United States. He was one of the founders of Caltech and had a major influence on the educational philosophy and the core curriculum of Caltech. This article briefly reviews the life and achievements of Arthur Amos Noyes.
