Abstract Cerium is the most abundant one among the rare-earth elements. Based on its unique physical and chemical properties, cerium can be used as many kinds of products with different properties and widely used in metallurgy, petrochemical industry, machining, light industry, environmental protection, agriculture, military industry and other fields. Also, cerium is an indispensable component of new energy, emerging industries, advanced equipment manufacturing and other high-tech industries. In this paper, we review recent researches on the application of cerium-based materials closely related to production and life, including metallurgy, luminescent and igniting materials, glass and ceramics industry, polishing powder, catalysts.
