Comprehensive Chemical Experiment: Synthesis and Characterization of 4,4'-[(2,2-Diphenylethene-1,1-diyl)bis(4,1-phenylene)] dipyridine and Its Aggregation-Induced Emission Property

Abstract This experiment, coming from teachers' scientific research, can synthesize a new compound 4,4'-dipyridine (2Py-TPE) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property by two simple steps (condensation and Suzuki reaction) in order to enhance the students' experimental operation and innovative ability. The target compound was purified by the common organic separation means, such as filtration, washing, extraction, drying and column chromatography. The characterization and AIE property of the compound was investigated by NMR, high-resolution mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy and transient fluorescence spectroscopy. This experiment can not only help students understand the research status of AIE materials based on tetraphenylethylene, but also cultivate students' comprehensive experimental ability and scientific research ability.
