Abstract On the basis of reviewing the relevant international literature, through the discrimination of chemistry education research and chemistry research, general education research and other chemistry education activities, this paper discusses the basic characteristics of chemistry education research, the professional requirements of chemical education researchers and the basic requirements that chemical education research design should follow in terms of theoretical basis, research questions and methods. It may be beneficial to improve the understanding of chemical education research, enhance the scientific level of chemical education research in China, and promote the development of chemical education research field.
