Abstract From ancient speculative atomism to modern scientific atom-molecule theory, the determination of atomic weight is the key to its development from qualitative to quantitative. The atomic weight paradigm provides a new way for chemists to study matter. The relative definition of atomic weight determines the importance of the base value of atomic weight. Eventually, atomic weight took over from equivalent weight measure and spread before it, and went global. This process not only makes us realize the twists and turns of scientific development, but also makes people understand the importance of scientific communication.
