Abstract Talent training is the core mission and essential requirement of high education. The state puts forward new requirements for talent training in colleges and universities through the “double first-class” construction project. In response to this, the College of Chemistry and Materials, Northwestern University, conducts constantly innovation on the cultivation of undergraduate students with focuses on “whom to be cultivated” and “how to cultivate”. Four synergetic measures have been set up to, including constructing a scientific research and training system by introducing tutors for the undergraduate students, building up internationally cooperative program to expand the academic vision, setting up performance evaluation system to motivate teachers devoting to teaching, and creating a practical education system to improve the innovative consciousness among students. The practice has shown fruitful results in the innovative development of talent training in high education.
