Abstract Compared with the traditional organic electrolytes, solid electrolytes are of better thermal stability, higher electrochemical window, better mechanical properties and no pollution. More importantly, the energy density of lithium ion battery containing a solid electrolyte is higher than that of traditional lithium battery, so solid electrolytes have become the focus of current research. This review summarizes the advantages, research progress and relative issues of various solid state electrolytes, including inorganic solid electrolytes, solid polymer electrolytes, gel electrolytes and composite electrolytes and the development direction of solid electrolytes are also prospected.
