Abstract Achieving carbon neutrality is critical to alleviating the environmental degradation and climate change crisis. To help middle school students understand the urgent need to reduce carbon footprint, a project-based lesson on carbon dioxide was given. Coral-bleaching was chosen as the research topic and data was visualized by virtual experiments. In this lesson students deepened understanding of the key concepts, developed social awareness and built science literacy.
