Abstract The reaction mechanism of sodium hydroxide solution with common non-metallic oxides such as carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, sulfur trioxide, nitrogen trioxide, nitrogen dioxide and chlorine dioxide is analyzed and compared by using the arrow push method, which is a method to analyze and write the reaction mechanism of organic chemistry. The preliminary analysis shows that some non-metallic oxides experience a nucleophilic addition reaction process similar to that under alkaline conditions in organic chemical reactions during the reaction with sodium hydroxide solution.
