Abstract As an early exploration of the science society of Peking University, the Chemistry Department of Peking University first established the “chemistry lecture club” in 1917, and then launched the “true society”. Although some extracurricular activities were carried out, those societies were small in scale and short in duration. In 1922, the Chemical Society of Government University of Peking with more standardized organization was established, which finally became an important platform for gathering students to carry out extracurricular learning and provided powerful assistance for classroom education. The development and evolution of student associations in the Chemical Society of Government University of Peking reflects the rising willingness of students’ autonomy and collective research in this period. The participation and activities of associations are beneficial to the growth of students. However, due to the lack of scientific culture ,the constraints of social environment and political situation, scientific associations at that time still faced many obstacles in the process of development.
