Abstract Unit operations of chemical engineering is a fundamental course of chemical engineering majors. It is the cornerstone for solving production problems in the chemical industry. The teaching innovation is carried out to meet the new requirements of the connotation development of new engineering disciplines for university engineering course. The innovative teaching concept is“grounded in engineering, strengthening foundations, building stepladders, and cultivating competencies”.Challenges in the teaching of chemical engineering courses need to be addressed, including difficulties in acquiring engineering knowledge, developing engineering thinking, and solving engineering problems.A“learning, thinking, and application advanced three-step”teaching mode is designed to systematically integrate learning enhancement, engineering thinking cultivation, and applied competency development. The restructured curriculum establishes three interconnected chains:a knowledge-progression chain for conceptual mastery,a problem-driven chain for analytical skill refinement, and a practice-immersion chain for contextualized engineering application.Innovative teaching practices present an advanced three-step driving three transformations:knowledge acquisition(from what to why),problem-solving(from exams to engineering challenges),and application(from imitation to innovation).Practice has proven that improvement of students’ academic performance and ability to solve complex engineering problems is obvious after teaching reform. The innovative practice of the curriculum has been widely praised by peers. It can provide reference and guidance for the teaching reform of similar professional courses.
