Design and Teaching Practice of Scale-Up Chemical Engineering Comprehensive Experiment:Synthesis and Application of Surfactants for Water Treatment

Abstract At present,most of the chemicalengineeringexperiments commonly conducted are on a small scale,which cannot effectively train students’ abilities to solve the practical problems.Therefore,this paper combined the authors’ scientific research works,focused on the practical production and application,and comprehensively considered factors such as safety,controllability,environmental protection,and economic efficiency,took“scale-up of surfactant synthesis and application for water treatment(3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl(long-chain-alkyl)dimethylammonium chloride)”as the theme,to design a scale-up chemical engineeringcomprehensive experiment,and a successfulscale-upapplication experiment was achieved for the synthesis with a scale of 3 kg and treatment of 90 L(~90 kg)of dye wastewater.By implementing this scale-up chemical engineering comprehensive experiment,students developed basic abilities to control the practical production reactions and conventional equipment.At the same time,it was beneficial to broaden students’ thinking,cultivate environmental awareness,and improve their comprehensive abilities to solve the practical problems and integrate applications.
