Abstract A simple method is introduced for equipping a common spectrophotometer with data output and basic wavelength scanning capabilities.Without requiring the manufacturer’s matching data cable and software, only a USB-to-serial port converter cable is needed to successfully connect the spectrophotometer to a computer, enabling the computer to receive measurement data sent by the spectrophotometer.By combining an infrared tracking sensor to control the PRINT button of the spectrophotometer, absorbance data at various wavelengths can be automatically and continuously sent to the computer, thus achieving a basic wavelength scanning function. The modification method is convenient to implement, low in cost, and simple and easy to carry out, making it suitable for upgrading and modifying common manual UV-visible spectrophotometers and fluorescence spectrophotometers in a wide range of laboratories.
