Abstract Similarity and periodic gradation are typical and remarkable in the properties of s-block elements, this article provides a novel theoretical framework to explain the regularity of periodic gradation: In the relationship of structures and properties, monotonic laws are usually related to single variable control, and non-monotonic laws are related to multiple variable control. Through which, this paper further explains monotonic and non-monotonic laws in s-block elements, including boiling point, density, electrode potential, stability and solubility of ionic compounds.
