Abstract The development of Chinese middle school chemistry textbooks,since the foundation of People's Republic of China,can be divided into five phases. The problems in the development lie in:the relation of social politics,ideology and the development of chemistry textbooks; the connection between theories in chemistry textbooks and practices in reality; the update of chemistry textbooks;the sequence in composing elements,compounds and basic theories;the accordance between the construction of academic knowledge and students' cognition;learning foreign chemistry textbooks etc.Review on those problems and revealing the laws behind the historical development can provide hints and enlightenment to the improvement of Chinese middle school chemistry textbooks.
