Abstract The average relative molecular weight of polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride, which is a novel polymer disinfectant, is determined by the viscosimetry. Using the literature values of K = 3.8 × 10-3 g/mol and α=1.01, the average relative molecular weight of the self-made polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride is 2495, when its concentration is 0.04 g/mL. The results showed that polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride with different relative molecular weight has certain antibacterial effects on escherichia coli, staphylococcus aureus, staphylococcus and pseudomonas aeruginosa at the same concentrations, and antibacterial effect is increased with the increase of relative molecular weight.
