Abstract A series of Hantzsch esters 1,4-dihydropyridines with bioactive and biomedical property were synthesized by one-pot method in water using aromatic aldehyde, ethyl (methyl) acetoacetate and ammonium carbonate as starting materials and polyethylene glycol-400 (PEG-400) as phase transfer catalyst. The effects of different factors were investigated such as ratio of raw materials, reaction temperature, solvent and ratio of phase transfer catalyst. Reaction time was confirmed using thin layer chromatography (TLC), ammonium salts were also studied and the optimum experiment conditions were decided. The method has the advantages of good yields, less pollution and friendly environment. The structures of final products were characterized by FT-IR and 1H NMR.
