Abstract A series of arylmethylenemalononitrile compounds were synthesized by the Knoevenagel condensation reactions of different aromatic aldehydes and malononitrile under solvent-free conditions catalyzed by basic alumina. The experimental results showed that the method possessed the advantages of simple operation and work-up procedure, good yields, recyclable catalyst being and friendly to environment. It fulfills the requirement of green chemistry.
