Abstract This paper discussed the construction of the concept of organic compounds and substitution reaction, which showed that the reaction between methane and chlorine played an important role in organic chemistry teaching. Analyzed the misunderstanding of the conditions (such as the selection of light source), the types of products, the verification method of products, the ratio of the reactants and the risks of the experiment of the reaction between methane and chlorine using theoretical and experimental methods, and put forward an improved experiment program and the directions to eliminate the misunderstanding of teaching.
