Abstract The emergence and development of anesthetic have made an indelible contribution to relieving human pain. China was the earliest country using the narcotic drug. There was "poison" in Warring States Period, "MaFeiSan" made by Hua Tuo in later Eastern Han Dynasty, "Sleeping Saint San" in Song Dynasty, "Knockout Drops" in Ming Dynasty. In western countries, the earliest used modern anesthetic was "laughing gas", ether and other narcotic drugs appeared subsequently. With the rapid development of modern chemistry, the widely use of anesthetics like xenon, propofol and sugammadex has greatly contributed to relieve human pain.
