Abstract Aimed at the accuracy in determining the content of bentonite in drilling fluid by methylene blue method in the course of "basic experiments of oilfield chemistry", this experiment was improved by analyzing influence factors and optimizing conditions. Then the modified method was used in basic experiments teaching, open experiments and scientific research. Effects were gained in cultivating practical ability, innovative ability, spirit of seeking truth and engineering consciousness of undergraduates majored in petroleum engineering, assisting scientific research and directing site operation.
