Abstract Digital colorimetric analysis is a new analytical method emerged with the rapid development of digital products in recent years, which often needs values of three-primary colors (R, G and B) of the samples. However, R, G and B are often affected by the photographing environments such as object distance and type of lamp. Therefore, this paper developed a new method called RGB normalization to determine nitrite in aqueous samples via Griess reaction. The precision of RN, GN and BN (normalized R, G and B) is significantly better than that for untreated R, G and B. The process described in this paper can provide a new way for the field analysis of pollutants, and it can be chosen as one of experiments in the general elective experiment course for liberal arts students.
