Abstract This study adopted a modified version of the Bonding Representation Inventory, which was developed by Stacey Lowery Bretz from Miami University Oxford, and improved it to four-tier test by adding the confidence rating tiers. The instrument was implemented on 260 grade one students from senior high school of Ningbo city. The findings indicated that most of the participants showed low confidence whereas their choices were correct, or high confidence whereas their choices were wrong. Seven significant misconceptions were identified and four of them were genuine ones with high confidence. The confidence rating used in this study improved the two-tier test to some extent.
