Abstract Based on redox and primary battery theory, ZnO rods were prepared from Zn foil via a Pt-induced electrochemical process, where ZnO/Zn served as an anode and Pt/H2O/H2 served as a cathode. Zn could be transferred into ZnO rod array under the Pt-induced action. The samples were charactered by XRD, SEM and UV-vis absorption etc, which proved that ZnO rods were formed on the ZnO foil. The synthesis method could not only show the construction of redox couples, but also emphasize the import function of inert electrode in a primary battery. The operation of the novel experiment was very sample, and its phenomena were visual. The students can further understand redox theory through the novel experiment, which will stimulate students' enthusiasm for learning and innovation.
