Abstract This paper investigated the characteristics of American organic chemistry textbooks in appearance, content arrangement, content illustration, learning assistance, etc. Furthermore, this study analyzed the functions of American organic chemistry textbook for developing students' creative thinking, and provided insights for improvement of organic chemistry teaching and students' creative capacity training.
