Abstract With the help of video analysis and a rubric for measuring the effectiveness of instructional explanation developed by Hannah Sevian and Lisa Gonsalves, this paper made a comparative research on instructional explanation to find the differences between pre-service and in-service chemistry teachers using the teaching cases of chemical equilibrium. Results showed that the obvious differences existed in the aspects of PCK,PC and CK, specifically, in the aspects of factual knowledge, ability to transfer knowledge to broader contexts, use of mental images to support explanation and scaffolding explanation.
