Abstract This paper analyzed conditions for meaning construction of "valence of element" based on constructivism theory, studied teaching design and teaching practice, and achieved ideal teaching effect. The results showed that using "price" to express the ability of one atom bonded atoms of other elements and guiding students to form concept of "valence of elements" accurately could improve students' ability to write chemical formula.
