Abstract Experiments are extremely important in chemistry, whereas the experiment teaching in chemical elective courses is still ineffective. This paper described the introduction of inquiry experiments into the elective couse of separation technique, and illustrated the experiment design and the advantages taking the experiment of the preparation of Schiff base and the identification of fluoride ion by naked eyes as an example. The results showed that the attempt was in favor of improving the comprehensive quality and developing scientific interests of the students who have chosen the course. Moreover, some suggestions were listed based on the improvement of the attempt in future.
