Universal Equation for pH Calculation of Acid-Base Systems and Accurate Solutions of Equations by Mathematica

Abstract The pH calculation of acid-base solution is the key and difficult part in the theory course study of undergraduate analytical chemistry. There are many formulas and conditions for approximate calculation in the textbooks, which are limited to some simple acid-base system. In this study, the acid-base reaction balances among acids, bases and amphoteric substances were expressed using acid dissociation constant (Ka). Accordingly, the proton balance equations were established, and then the universal equation for pH calculation of all the acid-base system was derived. By the use of Mathematica software, it was quite convenient to obtain the accurate solutions of equations. Through learning general formulas and employing computer software for accurate calculation of pH, it was more beneficial for students to overall master the theoretical basis and accurate solutions in complex systems of pH calculation during learning analytical chemistry.
