Abstract In teaching coordination compound in basic chemistry for medical field, inquiry design based on the problem-oriented teaching mode was employed. With the approach of asking questions-solving problem, such knowledge elements as the definition, structures and applications of coordination compounds could be connected. Meanwhile, the experimental demonstration and medical cases were shown in the problem-oriented mode so teaching effects could be achieved with halved efforts. The results showed that inquiry teaching design based on the problem-oriented mode could not only create a fresh atmosphere of interaction classroom but also cultivate students' awareness of autonomous learning and innovation, stimulate students' strong curiosity, attention and initiative spirit, and then help students to understand and master new knowledge in active learning process.
