Abstract This paper demonstrated and discussed the use of synergistically combining traditional and half-open teaching modes in organic synthesis laboratory courses taking "synthesis of benzocaine" as an example. During the teaching process, the teacher not only conducted knowledge and skill based on traditional teaching modes but also used a half-open mode to inspire students' enthusiasm for learning and to train them in independent thinking. This new teaching mode displayed promising effects and a feasible approach to improve teaching outcomes.
