Abstract In this paper, the reformation of teaching mode in basic medical chemistry experiment is exemplified through determination of the formula and the stable constant of an Iron (III)-sulfosalicylate complex. Students' participation in the whole process of preparation and teaching is demonstrated by the strengthening of the teaching staff and the application of open laboratories. Their consciousness of problems and ability of inquiry can be trained when some details are focused to guide students to discover the drawbacks of using HClO4 in the current textbook, then to analyze and find the possibility of using HNO3 instead of HClO4, and finally to solve the problem by experiments. Thus, students' innovative abilities can be fostered with the teaching purpose achieved.
