Abstract The preparation and properties study of Fe(OH)3 sols is an experimental curriculum of college chemistry, but the light scattering property of Fe(OH)3 sol is weak and the color change of the sol induced by electrolyte is not obvious to observe. These deficiencies lead to undesirable experimental results. To cover these shortages, this work used gold sol to improve the experiment and carried out the studies of dynamic and optical properties of gold sols, electrophoresis of gold sols, and the coagulation induced by electrolytes. The results showed that gold sols were easy to prepare and possessed excellent optical property. The operation of properties study was simple with ideal results. Thus gold sols can serve as a substitution of Fe(OH)3 sols for student experiment.
