Abstract The 2017 International Young Naturalists' Tournament (IYNT) was held in China. As a useful attempt to informal science learning, IYNT ran through the idea of STEM education and covered knowledge, methods and skills of the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, to cultivate students' science interest and 21st century skills. IYNT took science debate as the main form of the tournament, the IYNT regulations, and the problems for science debate and criteria for grades showed distinct characteristics of encouraging problem-based learning, interdisciplinary perspective and active cooperative learning. The review of IYNT could be a reference and enlightenment for us to provide more STEM learning opportunities to young students and carry out informal science learning from the perspective of STEM education.
