Abstract This paper used Nernst equation and reduction potential data to deduce, and through experiment verification, it was found that the extraction of iodine from kelp needed acidic condition and the best oxidant was ferric salt. The concentration of ferric salt and pH of solution were not needed to be controlled specifically, ferri ion could oxidize iodide ion to iodine while further oxidation did not occur.
