Abstract In the college students' innovative research projects, biodiesel was prepared with a green ionic liquid catalyst to clean energy as the breakthrough point. 1-methyl-3-(propyl-3-sulfonyl) imidazolium hydrogensulfate was synthesized and immobilized by impregnating method to the surface of porous silica. Biodiesel has been produced by transesterification of sunflower seed oil with[PSMIM]HSO4/SiO2.The effect of amount of catalyst, reaction temperature, molar ratio and reaction time was investigated. The results of experiment showed that the conversion rate was the highest under transesterification on conditions of reaction time 10 h, reaction temperature 160℃, catalyst dosage 8% and molar ratio of methanol to oil 25:1, and the conversion rate was up to 92.5%.[PSMIM]HSO4/SiO2 were characterized by FTIR, XRD and 13C NMR. Components of biodiesel were analyzed by gas chromatograph (GC). The performance of biodiesel had been conformed to the standards of biodiesel in our country, including the freezing point, density and kinematic viscosity. This project not only has made some achievements in research, but also has promoted the students' innovation and team consciousness, as well as teachers' teaching ability.
