Abstract This paper introduced a chemistry major undergraduate experiment abroad to investigate the esterification reaction via the olfactory sense. In this experiment, the change of smell between starting material and product was applied as a novel and convenient indicator of the extent of a certain organic reaction. The background, principle, design and result analysis of the experiment were introduced, hoping to provide helpful insight and experience in how to introduce the smell test into the Chinese organic experiment education.
