Abstract According to the principle, analytical chemistry can be divided into chemical analysis and instrumental analysis. High sensitivity, high selectivity, high automation, digitization and intelligentization have been the development direction of analytical chemistry. Instrumental method has become the mainstream of analytical chemistry. Therefore, undergraduate students always ignore the important role of chemical analysis and its scope of application, and make the mistake that the instrumental method is universal. We chose complexometric titration method and atomic absorption spectrometry to detect lead content of test solution respectively. On the basis of the relative error of the results, we explored the scope of chemical analysis and instrumental method. It corrected the wrong ideas of the undergraduates that instrumental method is universal and it can replace the chemical analysis all the time.
