Abstract Sandwich teaching method is carried out in physical chemistry teaching with the derivation of chemical potential expressions as an example. It is discussed in detail that how the teacher raises questions to present teaching objectives, how the students explore and solve the problems through self-study and discussion in class, and how to return back to the teaching objectives in the end. Through the utilization of Sandwich teaching method, which needs the students to participate in the class as a main part instead of the teacher, the students grasp deep insights in some important physical chemical concepts, formulas and methods, including the concept of chemical potential, the thermodynamic basic relations, and the state function method. Compared with traditional teaching methods, Sandwich teaching method can greatly motivate the students' initiative learning enthusiasms and help a lot with their physical chemistry study.
